Homelessness Supports
McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act/Every Student Succeeds Act

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, reauthorized in 2015 by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), is a federal law that provides educational support for children and youth experiencing homelessness. The act ensures that homeless students have access to free, appropriate public education. .
If you don’t have a fixed, regular or adequate nighttime residence and live without a legal guardian, you also qualify for McKinney-Vento protections. An unaccompanied youth is a person under 22 who lives without a parent or legal guardian, even if their family wants them to return home.
