School Choice
Beginning with the 2021-2022 school year, the Lake Region Union Elementary-Middle School District will offer school choice to all students in grades K-8. This means that students will be able to apply to attend a school other than the school in the town where they reside. Choice is limited to the other schools in the District, which includes schools in Albany, Barton, Brownington, Glover, Irasburg, and Orleans. Busing will only be offered to schools in the town where the student resides. The application process will open February 1. Applications will be approved or disapproved based on the criteria in the guidelines.

LRUEMSD Election Issues
What Happened
Yesterday, March 8 was the Australian ballot budget vote for the Lake Region Union Elementary-Middle School District. Polling places in each of our 7 towns were supposed to be open from 10:00am-7:00pm for voters to cast their ballots. Voters who preferred to vote by mail were able to request a mail-in ballot. The Westmore town clerk did not operate a polling place. When this was brought to my attention I immediately contacted the school district clerk and the elections division at the Secretary of State’s office.
Later in the day, the Westmore clerk provided this explanation, “With all the changes in election process this year due to COVID it has been challenging. We are all doing our best and this got missed. While not ideal and a mistake, it was not intentional or purposeful.” When people showed up to vote she did give them a ballot and allowed them to vote but she didn't run an actual polling place, and the hours she let people vote were different from the other towns.
At their regularly scheduled school board meeting last night (March 8), the LRUEMSD board heard from the school district clerk (who is also the Barton town clerk), Kristin Atwood, about what happened and what options the board has for next steps. After listening to Kristin Atwood and learning about the advice from the Secretary of State's office, the board voted to invalidate the election and hold another election on April 13. The board set April 12 at 5:30pm as the date and time for the informational meeting. All clerks were immediately notified that the election had been invalidated.
What’s Next
We will publish a new warning, hold another informational meeting, and each town clerk will operate a polling place in their town on April 13. Information will be published in local newspapers, on our website, and on the OCSU Facebook page. I spoke with Will Senning from the elections division of the Secretary of State’s office again, and reviewed all next steps with him. Current school board members will continue to serve until the election is held.
Clarification: NO votes were counted in this election. The school board invalidated the election before counting began.
